Budapest
Culture – Budapest is a city of theatre
and culture and the citizens take their classical
music, theatre, folk traditions, etc very seriously.
Cultural experiences in Budapest Hungary are all over
the place and here we mention just a few of the musical
and theatre ones you might like to explore.
The State Opera House Budapest is
splendid and you just have to see it. Find out the
programme for the time you will be there, go to opera
or concert and make sure to look around at the magnificent
interior, the paintings on the wall, gilded ceilings
etc. You’ll enjoy the music but you will be
amazed at the décor. If you don’t fit
in a performance there are guided tours in English
around this sumptuous Opera House. In Budapest, they
put on an amazing range of opera performances with
an everchanging programme.
There is also the Erkel Theatre
– the second opera house of Budapest –
ordinary décor compared to the Budapest State
Opera House – but you might prefer the opera
or concert there.
Check out the Budapest Operetta Theatre
– it has lighter music including musicals, etc.
There are also loads of classical music concerts in
a great number of venues around Budapest including
St Matthias Church.
Theatre going is a big thing in
Budapest, weekday evenings and matinees and evening
performances at the weekend. The locals really support
their Theatre (and Opera, Classical Music, etc) and
it is interesting to see them coming out of a matinee
performance at the weekend, semi-formally dressed.
There are some English language
performances – first check out the Merlin Theatre
as it is the most likely bet.
Go to a Folk and Traditional Music or Dance
performance before you leave Budapest. Your
hotel reception can help you with this. Excellent
and authentic shows of Hungarian Dancing are put on
at The Folklor Centrum with Roma Music. The Hungarian
State Folk Ensemble also has a brilliant show. Make
sure to include a Folk Music Night during your trip,
you’ll love the local colour, music, dance etc
and you might even learn a step or two of a traditional
Hungarian Dance.
